Childhood Tecmo story: Truth is, I didn’t own an NES until 2002.  As a kid when I roasted my Intellivision and because I owned so many games, mom bought me another intellivision although I begged for an NES! I’d spend the night with friends and stay up all night getting my Tecmo fix. They’d wake up and there I was, still making Okoye flavored popcorn vs the cpu. Even though I didn’t own an NES, as a kid I only lost in Tecmo twice. Both times QBEagles fumbled to cause my losses. To this day he’s my ultimate hail mary play so to speak. And the reason I now just move the chains and try to get outtabounds. Side fact: The only reason Steve Engel and I are friends is because of a Tecmo Super Bowl rivalry that started 12 years ago, and ignited 3 years ago. I don’t even really like him that much, he’s just pretty good at Tecmo.  But I’m clearly better.
What do you I most about Tecmo Super Bowl? The simplicity.  The complexity.  The mystique.  The cult.  We have endless knowledge of the game and at the same time still have many unanswered questions.
How long have I been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? 22 years. 3 years actively

What is your childhood Tecmo story? When I was 12, I attended a Superbowl party and discovered the greatest football video game ever created.  During halftime, I noticed a few guys disappear into another room. Quite a bit of yelling and laughing ensued, so I decided to see what was going on. After I watched them play a few games of Tecmo Super Bowl, they asked if I wanted a turn.  Of course, I took my favorite team, The Philadelphia Eagles.  It was amazing to use the “Ultimate Weapon”, QB Eagles, on every offensive snap.  Even though his name was not used in the game, there was no doubt in my young mind that it was Randall Cunningham.  On defense, I controlled Reggie White.  Although I did not understand any of the strategies or nuances of the game, I had never played another video game like it.
What do you like most about Tecmo Super Bowl?:  It has the best combination of gameplay, strategy and luck ever in a football video game.
How long have you been playing Tecmo Super Bowl?: I started playing more actively in High School and College.  Then in 2010 my mind was blown when I found a YouTube video of Francis “Mort” Buennagal defeating Matt O’Toole in Madison VI.  Shortly thereafter I started competing in tournaments and hosted several of my own in Northeast Ohio to benefit the Salvation Army.  This year I retired as a tournament host, but hope to play in some more local tournaments.  A great community has formed around this game and I have enjoyed getting to know many of the players.
Favorite Tecmo Super Bowl player: QB Eagles.  Nicknamed “The Ultimate Weapon”, Randall Cunningham had perhaps the greatest season ever for a QB in 1990 passing for 3,466 yards, rushing for 942 yards, and accounting for 35 total TD’s.  Less than one year later, those statistics resulted in video game immortality.

What is your childhood Tecmo story? Watching buddies play tecmo, Chris Scheks was up in the closing seconds, looking to run up the score thew a hail mary which was intercepted by Dustin Shrock (fellow attendee) using Lonnie Young on the 1 yard line and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to win the game.
What do you you most about Tecmo Super Bowl? Simple game yet very complex.
How long have you been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? Played as a kid religiously then picked it back up in high school for a tecmo league, then no action for about 10 years until 3 months ago found the love for the game again.
Favorite Tecmo Super Bowl player: QB Eagles – how can you not love him.  So fun to play with.

Give me your childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story – Tecmo has been in the family for years, whether it be playing against my 2 brothers and the neighborhood friends or with Matt & Kyle Miller on holidays where we would stay up as late as possible playing Tecmo Super Bowl and Shadowgate.
What do you like most about Tecmo Super Bowl?  I love the simplicity yet innate complexity of the game.  There’s always something different you can do in each game to change the outcome no matter how many thousands of games you’ve played.
How long have you been playing Tecmo Super Bowl?  22 years
Favorite Tecmo Super Bowl player – Derrick Thomas, from his position, guy can do everything from stop the run, defend the pass, as well as easily block extra points.

Give me your childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story. When I received it for the first time for Christmas when it first came out my brothers and I played it all day.
What do you like most about Tecmo Super Bowl?  I love the simplicity of the gameplay. Nothing over the top graphically or in the gameplay. Who needs spin moves, jukes, and a tank stick when you can popcorn your opponent? Nothing is greater than that feeling of grappling your opponent and winning the battle. Cause if you do, its pay dirt all day as you watch him fly across the screen. I love being able to play online in such a great community and keep this game alive!  I love reading online profiles of players with zaney tecmo qoutes and edited pictures of pop culture with a tecmo twist. “The best defense in Tecmo is a good offense”
How long have you been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? Since it came out. Online play about 3 years. This year will mark my first time in live tourneys. Just played live for first time in probably 15+ years at Mini Midwest Tourney this year and was great to dust off the old controllers.
Favorite Tecmo Super Bowl player.  I don’t really have any favorites because I love playing with every team. If I had to choose something that has overwhelmed me with Tecmo Spirit it would be “Greatest Tecmo Story Ever” by Big Red. And this man who wrote that story is my favorite Tecmo Player ever. It has inspired me to be a Seahawks fan in the game and dominate with James “Earl” Jones, Dave Krieg, and John L. Williams. http://www.tecmosb.com/Downloads/Documents/Greatest%20Tecmo%20Story%20Ever.pdf.

Give me your childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story. So many matches with friends but the one I remember most is playing an entire game or games I should say with my friend, using our feet instead of hands to pick plays / control the players. I welcome any challengers to a good old fashioned foot game…
What do you like most about Tecmo Super Bowl? The little intricacies like QB Browns, Eagles, and Bills. The old NFL rosters from my childhood. Also the mind games/strategy that each game brings. “Live and let Tecmo”

Who is your favorite Tecmo player? Cowboys DB Issiac HoltHow long have you been playing Tecmo? “Started when I was about 15, online since 2006.”Childhood Tecmo story: “Playing friends and family all night long. A lot of hollering and hooting at 3 a.m.; Tecmo hooting that is.”Are you just naturally good at the game or is it the fact that you grew up playing the game? “I’d say natural. Growing up you had no idea the ins and outs of this game. After you get your rear end handed to you, the only option is to learn the many different strategies of this game. When I first started playing online, what I did was print out the plays on a paper. I numbered each different receiver, so basically I knew what receiver I had if I tapped two times or whatever number of times. I had that sheet with me when I first started playing, eventually memorizing it. I finally rid the sheet.”

Give me your childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story.  My mom bought the game when it first came out.  I loved it immediately.  Played my friends everytime they came over.  Even would play up to 5 seasons in a day some days.  Addict!  When I was younger I never lost until I realized that there were people as obsessed as me.  Started playing online 6 months ago and have been to your tournament the past two years and will continue as long as you have them.
What do you like most about Tecmo Super Bowl? The simplicity, but also the immense skill level it takes to play at the highest level.  The fact that after over 20 years there are hundreds if not thousands of people that are still passionate about the game.  NO other game on any system has that kind of staying power.
How long have you been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? 22 years
Favorite Tecmo Super Bowl player. Tough question.  Of the elite players Bo and Jerry(they are easy to love).  I also really like Marino.  I love Fulcher but hate the team D he plays on.  I really like Dave Megget.

Childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story: My dad purchased TSB from Kmart when I was 11.  I found myself playing a lot of MAN v COM. Countless hours of season play, zigzagging the computer, and breaking tackles under my belt. I enjoyed playing full seasons with every team playing every single game game flipping a coin for who I would select. I played a lot of MAN v MAN in college.  After being undefeated for most of my sophomore year, I got into an argument with another person about how the 49ers should be outlawed because it was an unfair advantage.  After being defeated 17-14 (S.F. v RAI) I told my opponent to rematch me and let me have San Francisco.  I won 83-0.  It is the largest margin of victory I have ever defeated a human by. Some of my highlights for TSB are running for 1581 yards with Bo in one game using the backwards method, eight team interceptions (ATL) in one game, and maxing out the score on several occasions. I had a Tecmo notebook of accomplishments that I would die to have now.
What do I like most about Tecmo Super Bowl? Its simplicity, yet its complexity.  While only two buttons and eight plays, you are always learning new ways to get better.  I originally liked it because of the season statistics.  I now like it for the online community and friendships I have established.
How long have I been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? Since 1991.  Took a hiatus from 2006-2010 until I discovered online Tecmo.  Been playing online in leagues for the past three years.

What do I do for a living? Play Nintendo, who doesn’t?
Chiildhood Tecmo Super Bowl story: I never had the glorious oppourtunity to play the NES version as a child. When I went to visit my grandparents in Indiana, my second cousin had Tecmo Bowl on the NES, and we’d play that most of the time I was in town. He would smoke me so bad all the time because he was ten years older than me. When I was eight years old (1993), my best friend and I would play the hell out of TSB for the Super Nintendo, which was the version I’ve always been accustomed to until recently. We played so many Steelers/Oilers matchups that I had lost count. I still has his copy of the game to honor his memory.
What do I like most about Tecmo Super Bowl? Two things: For being such a “simple” game with a D-pad and two buttons, it’s incredibly cerebral when playing against a live opponent. I think the two biggest elements of this are the playbook screen, and choosing a defender before the play. Debating what play your opponent is picking, and on defense, what player you should control is some weird combination of video game chess-checkers (chesskers?) that I can’t summarize in this bio. Also, live tournaments are phenomenal. The people that come together for these tournaments are the nicest, most down-to-earth people you’ll ever met. Sure, you’re competing against them for cash and/or trophies, but in the end, it’s a group of people that love a video game and a sport. There’s no controller-throwing, obscenity-laden tirades that happen here; we’re not ten years old anymore. If you’re reading this, and you haven’t signed up for the tournament, just do it.
How long have I been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? TSB (SNES) – 20 years. TSB (NES) – 2 years.
Favorite Tecmo Super Bowl player: Fuad Reveiz. If you want to know why I like an average kicker in the game, you can ask me at the tournament for a funny story.

Childhood Tecmo story: I would just sit and watch. One time they asked me to play, and it caught on ever since. His friend tapped as fast as I did. It was always a good laugh listening to us grapple.
What do I like most about Tecmo? The different strategies, plays, defensive positions and understanding the importance of attributes.

Childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story: Just like any other Tecmo enthusiast, I never stopped playing through high school — leading up to this day. I would play the computer since no one else wanted to play. I even bought a new Nintendo in 1994 when mine broke. And despite having newer gaming systems, I just couldn’t go on if Tecmo couldn’t play. In hindsight, I’m surprised at how often I would run seasons versus the computer on the Nintendo and Sega versions. It wasn’t until 2002 I discovered online play.
What do I like most about Tecmo Super Bowl? Everything.

What do I do for a living? Supervise a program that works with adults who have MRDD
Childhood Tecmo Super Bowl story: Tecmo Bowl was the game when was a freshman in high school.  In fact it was the only game that was played because of the bragging rights that come with it.  Hours of my life have been spent with my Nintendo and Tecmo.  I still can recall spending hours a day blowing into my cartridge just to get it to work one last time 🙂  Better than that tilting my Nintendo or barely putting the game in the console to work.  Those were the days.
What do I like most about Tecmo Super Bowl?  Playcalling.  Yes it is a 8-Bit game, but that moment you and your opponent are looking at those 8 plays trying to call the right play is……priceless.  It’s a guessing game and that what makes it fun to me.

Childhood Tecmo story: I always remember borrowing my uncle’s copy of Tecmo Super Bowl. And I believe he eventually forgot it was his. We still have the copy today. He still doesn’t know it. Now I have 5 copies of the game, so I guess I could give it back. … Playing full seasons with my brother in one snow day off school. Mom and dad let us stay up later so that we could finish simulating seasons.
What do I like most about Tecmo? I also enjoy the simplicity of it all. Then, it was the introduction to stat-keeping, injuries and real players. Now, it’s strategy and knowledge. There is so much more about the game that makes you better than what I realized as a youngster growing up.
How long have I been playing Tecmo? Ever since the game came out in 1991. Haven’t skipped a year since without playing a game.

What do I like most about Tecmo? I love the simplicity.  The strategy.  The perfect combination of skill and a little luck.  I never latched on to Madden games because they were overly complex.
How long have I been playing?  I started playing in 1991, when I was 9…I played consistently throughout the 90’s, but haven’t played in about 13 years.  I just recently started playing a few games with friends to prepare for the tournament.

What do I like most about Tecmo Super Bowl? I like the fact that i can use TSB for good rather than evil. The Tourney i am holding in Youngstown the proceeds are going to a local charity to help kids with MRDD. I grew up with a brother who is a deaf mute, and I have been looking for a way to give back to the organization who has given my family so much due to my brother and it hit me TSB Tourney.  Not only would it raise money but it brings people to my hometown. It’s almost like I’m a little kid on christmas eve just thinking about it. and last but not least, the friends i have made because of TSB. ie Mort and Lou, The Vogt Bros., Pete Dorsey aka Cuban Tecmo just to name a few.
How long have I been playing Tecmo Super Bowl? I played TSB as a kid for what seemed like ever. but i am now just getting back into it. I have been playing for a little over a year now. I guess you could say i am a Rookie, But every dog has it’s day “VIVA EL TECMO!!!!!!!”
